drop weight tear Test

Drop weight tear tests (DWTT) are widely used in the gas pipeline industry to determine material characteristics such as brittle fracture resistance arrest in the seamless or welded. MES offers DWTT up to 3,600 ft-lbs of energy.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) 5L test standard is used to determine the fracture ductility of metal line pipe. Specimens are prepared from the material thickness and tested to required standards. ASTM E 436, similar to API-5L, is used to establish the temperature range over which ferritic steels undergo a fracture mode transition from ductile to brittle.

In both standards, a determination regarding ductile to brittle behavior is based upon visual inspection of the specimens. DWTT data is often coupled with Charpy impact resistance data to provide a more complete understanding of the ductile to brittle transition temperature.

Located in Dallas, MES has a complete metallurgical laboratory staffed with graduate level materials engineers to supervise all drop weight tear testing projects. Our full-service mechanical lab offers rapid test results at an affordable price. As an A2LA ISO 17025 accredited lab, quality is our focus.
